About this jug
Location:
Den Helder - Texel,
Netherlands
Long/Lat:
53.04602, 4.93964
Notes: A shipwreck found in the Wadden Sea near the former anchorage of the island of Texel.
The origin of the wood, the inventory and the construction of the ship indicate a northern German origin. The largest cargo (Spanish amphora jugs) points to an Iberian origin. Grapes and small fish (anchovies) also point in that direction. It is probably a German ship from the second half of the 17th century that sank on its return journey from the Iberian Peninsula. It was probably moored in the Texel anchorage to trade goods with the Amsterdam staple market.
