Notes: Shootinglee is a small township of half a dozen buildings often centred on a defensible aristocratic house with an adjacent small area of arable. The excavations revealed late medieval occupation comprising a pen in the return in the walls of two yards, an external clay oven, radiocarbon dated c.1450-1640, and late medieval pottery, including imported Bruhl stoneware from the Rhineland, and a post-medieval occupation including the later 16th century peel house, a peasant byre-dwelling of mid-17th century date, a detached cruck-roofed cattle byre of similar date, as well as various outbuildings and a garden. The facemask was found in a charcoal rich destruction deposit over a mid-17th century floor in the peel house dating to the 1670s.
