Notes: The Bartmann Jug was collected in July of 1924 from the interior of the island of Jolo in the Sulu Archipelago of the southern Philippines by Panglima Sabudin, agent for Carl Guthe’s University of Michigan Philippine Expedition of 1922-1925.

Time Period: 1600 - 1700

Feature description: The face or mask has been ground off which might be an example of aniconism. Among Sunni Muslims this is a proscription against the creation of images of living beings. Not just the depiction of Muhammad or God, but the depiction of all humans and non-human animals is discouraged. Today 99% of the population of Jolo are Muslim, the majority of whom are Sunni. The Muslim faith arrived in the region in 1380 more than 140 years before Magellan and 185 years before the founding of Spanish Cebu.
