About this jug

Medallion: Floral

Location:

Flevoland
Netherlands

Long/Lat: 52.507272, 5.471988

Archaeological Context: Sealed feature: Surface find (including mudlarking)

Notes: The bartmann jug was probably found in one of the Flovoland polders. Before the closure of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, this area was an inland sea called the Zuiderzee.
Many ships sank, but were preserved in the soft soil. Since the construction of the Flevoland polders in the mid-20th century, more than 400 shipwrecks have been discovered and investigated. The large number of shipwrecks in the soil makes Flevoland the largest “dry” ship graveyard in the world.
