Notes: The wreck of the VOC ship De Witte Leeuw was discovered in 1977 by Belgian diver R. Stenuit. It lay at a depth of 36 metres in Jamestown Bay on Saint Helena.
The East Indiaman De Witte Leeuw was part of the fleet that departed from Texel on 30 January 1610 under the command of the first appointed Governor-General of the VOC, Pieter Both. De Witte Leeuw was lost on 13 June 1613, on its return journey to the Netherlands from the Dutch East Indies. The cargo consisted of valuable spices and porcelain. They engaged in battle with Portuguese galleons near Saint Helena and the ship was burned. Part of the remaining crew sailed back to the Netherlands on the Vlissingen and the Bantam.
