About this jug
Location:
Zuiderdijk, Venhuizen, Netherlands
Netherlands
Long/Lat:
52.64824, 5.21728
Notes: The Zuiderdijk near Venhuizen is part of the chain of dykes that protects the Netherlands from flooding from the IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes. Until 1932, this area was still an inland sea called the Zuiderzee. Climate change and rising sea levels made it necessary to reinforce the dykes. Archaeological research was carried out prior to this work. For example, archaeological research was conducted at the Zuiderdijk in 2011. The Zuiderdijk is also part of the 126 km long Westfriese Omringdijk, which has protected West-Friesland from flooding since the thirteenth century.
